Vehicle-Wide Logging with DLT

One logging and debug framework across the whole vehicle, built on COVESA DLT. I architected this centralised, vehicle-wide framework at a top UK carmaker so engineers can trace faults across ECUs and operating systems from one consistent view.

The case study

Technologies: COVESA DLT, diagnostics and logging architecture, multi-ECU systems, C/C++, Python automation, ASPICE

The challenge
  • Many ECUs and operating systems, each logging in its own way

  • Different formats and tools, with no shared timeline

  • Root-cause analysis on bench and field issues became detective work

My approach
  • Standardised on COVESA DLT: consistent ECU, app and context IDs, levels and timestamps

  • One pipeline bringing logs from every ECU and OS into a single stream

  • Per-application log levels to control verbosity and bandwidth

  • The same framework for development rigs and vehicles in the field

  • Faster root-cause analysis for bench and field issues

  • One consistent, correlated view of the vehicle instead of scattered logs
