Health Management System

A central health manager that watches ECU software and recovers from faults. I was the architect responsible for the health management design within the cockpit domain at a leading premium automotive OEM.

The case study

Technologies: health monitoring, software supervision, watchdog patterns, fault recovery, hypervised multi-OS platform, DLT

The challenge
  • Lots of software across several operating systems on one controller

  • Any process can hang, crash or miss its deadlines

  • If nobody notices, the customer does: frozen screens or missing features

  • Ad-hoc self-monitoring doesn't scale and leaves gaps

My approach
  • Centralised supervision: one health manager for all monitored components

  • Liveness and deadline checks on critical sequences

  • Escalating recovery: restart a process, a partition or the wider system

  • Health events fed into logging so faults are traced, not silently hidden

  • A single, consistent view of software health across the controller

  • Predictable recovery when something goes wrong
