Centralised Vehicle Time

A single, trusted time source shared by every ECU in the vehicle. I was the architect responsible for the centralised vehicle time design within the cockpit domain at a leading premium automotive OEM.

The case study

Technologies: time synchronisation (e.g. gPTP / IEEE 802.1AS), automotive Ethernet, multi-ECU architecture, DLT

The challenge
  • Every ECU has its own clock, and clocks drift apart

  • Logs from different ECUs can't be lined up

  • Security events and certificates need trustworthy timestamps

  • Time-dependent features become fragile

My approach
  • One authoritative time master that other ECUs follow

  • Network time synchronisation, typically using industry-standard gPTP

  • Separating a precise, steady time base from calendar time

  • Defined behaviour at start-up or when the time source is lost

  • A consistent sense of time across the vehicle's ECUs

  • More reliable cross-ECU logs, diagnostics and time-dependent features
